This week in data – September 7th

What a week! Hot on the heels of the launch of Data Republic’s Open Data Marketplace to a packed-house (200+ attendees) at Stone&Chalk last week, our team headed down to speak with Australia’s big data community at the 2016 Hadoop Summit in Melbourne.

Both events were a great chance for our team to connect with industry leaders alongside the launch of our Open Data Marketplace. Since then, we’ve been lucky enough to garner some serious media attention.

Supratim Adhikuri’s piece on our mission to remove risk and build trusted global infrastructure for secure data exchange is particularly worth a read.

Enough about us! In other data news this week…

Airbnb has launched its first transparency report, an initiative to make its organization more transparent to the public and local governments. Airbnb has also started publishing information about the government requests they receive joining Google, Facebook and Uber who also publish this information.

The SMH explores the opportunities and ethical considerations of big data in public transport. Are we best leveraging the data Opal generates to deliver better services to the public?

HackerRank has run a ‘Programmer Olympics’ ranking the world’s programmers by country. We were surprised by some of the results . Time to pick up our game Aussies!

Finally, we share the secrets to getting the balance right in technology partnerships.

Until next time.
