This week in data – August 3rd

Google is set to use GPS location data to improve emergency service response times in the USA. The feature, already live in the UK, will automatically share an individual’s location when dialling 911 on an android phone. Google and US emergency services are confident the improved location accuracy will help save thousands of lives.

The battle between Facebook and Brazil continues…

Facebook in Brazil has been fined $11.6 million for refusing to share WhatsApp user data with local police following an investigation. This is the latest clash in a long-running dispute between the pair. Despite the fine, Facebook insists that it will continue to protect user privacy and freedom of communication.
