HyperHack Singapore: a datathon focused on health and financial outcomes

Data Republic team up with Temasek and StartupX for global HyperHack event

The world’s first global sustainability hackcelerator, HyperHack, took place in Singapore in November 2019.

Supported by Temasek and StartupX, the stated aim of HyperHack 2019 was for global change-makers to ideate and build solutions for a better and more sustainable future.

The HyperHack also featured a Datathon segment, where participants accessed synthetic data and analytics toolkits to build innovative data-driven solutions, focused on bettering health outcomes and financial well-being. This was a high-profile event supported by a number of partners, tapping on IMDA’s regulatory sandbox to explore trusted data sharing.

Said Jon Allaway, Chief Technology Officer, Temasek and HyperHack Judge:

As a generational investor, we are committed to deliver sustainable value over the long term. HyperHack has attracted global talent with an entrepreneurial spirit to tackle sustainability challenges and create substantial impact for future generations. As part of the judging panel, I look forward to hearing and evaluating innovative solutions that are scalable, and will be able to put our planet on a more sustainable footing.

Temasek chose Data Republic’s platform and Datathon Support Services to confidently govern the HyperHack Datathon Stream.

Partnering with Temasek three months ahead of the Datathon, Data Republic provided strategic advisory services on Datathon event preparation, governance of Datathon licensing, dataset de-identification and loading, as well as participant preparation.

The Data Republic Platform, a flexible and scalable analytical workspace solution with governance at its core, was the ideal choice for the Datathon Project. Temasek and StartupX were able to capture all licensing terms for the combined dataset and over 60 participants, and provide secure access to workspaces for analytics over the course of the weekend.

At the launch of the HyperHack Datathon, secure workspaces containing approved data and tooling were provisioned. This allowed teams to securely access and analyse synthetic public-private dataset combinations and design new data-driven sustainability solutions.

Best practice data de-identification, privacy and data access controls were rolled out for participants. With workspace access revoked for Datathon participants, a dedicated Data Republic support team were on the ground at the event to give expert advice and guidance.

One of our own consultants of data science and exchange at Data Republic, Yanni Mechtler, said:

As a Datathon Judge, the calibre of submissions, in their ability to develop and make tangible complex data solutions for some of Singapore’s toughest problems, proved to me that governed data collaboration really can be a backbone of social good enterprises. The Data Republic platform and the Datathon delivery team brought to life the idea that there doesn’t need to be a trade off between privacy preservation and the utility of the data for positive change.
