Data Republic and Geografia
Data Republic’s safe data sharing technology allows organisations like banks, airlines and governments to securely share data. By allowing data to safely move between organisations, we can help unlock insights which can not only improve individual customer experiences but drive tangible benefits to governments and society.
Geografia is a Data Republic partner, using Data Republic’s Data Sandbox to offer a unique data product called Spendmapp. Geografia’s Spendmapp is an example of a next-generation data insights product which has been enabled by secured transactional data flows on Data Republic’s Data Sandbox.
About Geografia’s Spendmapp
Geografia’s Spendmapp is a data visualization and reporting tool which allows local governments to measure economic activity across 15 industry sectors using anonymized, aggregate transaction data layered with population data to offer accurate economic insight into local economies. Spendmapp enables local governments to safely and securely access real transaction data to measure the benefits of investments, proving value in support of future projects. Spendmapp gives governments the ability to: Confidently measure the economic impact of local events; track jobs and floorspace demand created by policy and investment decisions; learn how to reduce escape expenditure; benchmark their local economy against other suburbs and municipalities.

Spendmapp in action: The AFL goes to Ballarat
The state and local government made an investment in the regional city of Ballarat in Victoria, Australia, upgrading the local sports precinct to be able to host AFL matches. The assumption was that by investing in this stadium and bringing AFL to the city, visitors would spend money on food, accommodation, and entertainment.
Measuring the outcome
Using real transaction data on Spendmapp, the City’s economic development team hoped to be able to measure exactly how much money game attendees spent over the weekend of the first AFL match. The data was available a few weeks after the game, cleaned and ready for analysis.
A goal for the local economy
The data did indeed provide evidence that visitor spending during that AFL weekend was $360,000 more than on an average winter weekend in Ballarat. By using big data and analytics, Spendmapp was able to measure how effective this investment was for the local economy. Access to anonymized financial transaction data allows Spendmapp to quantify this type of government activity and use data to better inform future decision-making.
