Welcome to our second annual 2017 This Year in Data report
What a year it’s been for Data Republic and the data industry in general! It’s so great to be able to step back and reflect on everything we’ve accomplished, learned and take stop of all that has influenced us along the way.
We’ve taken some big steps in 2017, including closing our bridge funding round, growing our team by 70% and began licensing our platform for the first time. We’re clearer than ever on our goal of enabling secure data exchange within and between organisations.

The last 12-months has been a big for data. It has been a hot topic not only in the industry trades but also in mainstream media.
The Economist highlighted the shift in the perception of data, stating: “The world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data”. While all of us at Data Republic know this to be true, it is exciting to see others are beginning to understand the true power of the data.
Wisdom can often begin with a piece of data that provides useful insights. This is one of the main reasons why Data Republic was built – to help businesses make better decisions with data.
We aim to find value for businesses through data analysis because we recognise that on its own, data is meaningless. Unless it is timely, relevant and applicable, it cannot contribute to better decision-making.
We’ve made it our goal to provide a secure platform where organisations could access data and insights from other entities, governments and individuals.
Our partnership with the NSW government in launching an open data marketplace is one example of this.
Our ecosystem is growing! We now have over 430 organisations.
This year, we’ve seen:
- 300% increase in the amount of data contributors on our platform
- 300+ new companies added
- 239 new projects started
- And 2 datathons have been run
In 2017, we launched our second upgrade to the SenateTM platform.
This year we’ve seen:
- Over 25 billion rows of data ingested
- 900+ unique users
- Over 350 dataset
The Minerva Collective
Launched in 2016, the Minerva Collective is a Data Republic not-for-profit affiliate dedicated to using data to deliver social good. They aim to reduce barriers for companies looking to donate data to social causes by providing participating companies with access to Data Republic’s secure data exchange technology. This year, they’ve identified 10 projects, seen growth of 450 new members and 8 not-for-profit partners.
